Place & story
A modest beginning
Kiltullagh National School began in October 1856 in a single room with a thatched roof and an earthen floor. Its own history describes a mixed school with four small windows and basic desks and benches. Teaching continued there, interrupted by periods of closure, until a replacement building opened in 1900. [2]
New buildings and new uses
A two-classroom school replaced the 1900 building in 1958; the older building became the parish hall. The school expanded again in 2005, 2011 and 2015. A further classroom came into use in September 2021 after a delay during the Covid-19 pandemic. These successive additions record the changing scale of a local institution founded in very modest premises. [2]
