Place & story
Reading the old church at Cummeen
Excavations directed by Jim Higgins in 1993 revealed several phases of Dysart’s old church at Cummeen. A twelfth-century round-headed window survives in the south wall, and excavation located a doorway of the same period. Much of the east gable belongs to rebuilding in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. An older enclosure bank and filled ditch, together with a fragment of lignite bracelet, suggested an early Christian origin for the site. [2]
A priest’s house within the church
Later builders divided off the western end of the church to form a priest’s house. Higgins’s investigation identified the dividing wall and a two-storey toilet turret attached outside the north wall. The alterations blocked the old southern entrance, so another doorway and porch were provided on the north. These changes show how the building was adapted to combine worship and residential use. [2]
The Catholic church’s bicentenary
Dysart’s Catholic church was built in 1825, initially as a modest rectangular building. In August 2025 its two-hundredth anniversary brought parishioners and visitors together for a Mass celebrated by Bishop Kevin Doran, the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and a gathering at the community centre. A souvenir booklet traced the area’s church history. The celebration marked a different chapter from the medieval church at Cummeen, centred on the building that continued to serve village worship.
