Place & story

A market house becomes a courthouse

Virginia’s courthouse began around 1830 as a market house. Its paired ground-floor arches recall that commercial use, although they were later filled in with windows. The architectural inventory places it at the former narrow end of the fair green on Main Street. The green was subsequently incorporated into the Church of Ireland grounds, while the fair moved behind the market house. [2]

The courtroom within

Remodelling around 1920 gave the former market house another layer of public history. The survey records timber courtroom fittings from that period, including the judge’s canopy, clerk’s desk and benches for the public. Decorative plasterwork divides the ceiling above them. Refurbishments followed in 1973 and around 2000. These surviving features preserve evidence of judicial use within a building originally intended for trade. [2]

A church that shapes the approach

Lurgan parish church occupies a prominent position where roads converge in Virginia. Its tower and octagonal stone spire align with the entrance to the Headfort hunting-lodge estate. Battlements, pinnacles and pointed windows give its early nineteenth-century design a deliberately Gothic character. Beneath the chancel is a crypt with a separate entrance. The grounds, gates and mature trees contribute to the building’s commanding setting. [3]
