People & connections

George Luke O’Connor’s library commission

George Luke O’Connor won the limited competition for Blackrock’s Carnegie Library and Technical Institute, competing against Francis Caldbeck. Carnegie approved the plans in July 1904, and the building opened in 1905. The Irish Architectural Archive identifies C. T. Jolley of Blackrock as contractor, preserving the names behind this investment in public reading and technical education. [2]

Joining old buildings and new spaces

McCullough Mulvin’s later design brought the former town hall, Carnegie library and municipal technical schools into a combined college and public-library complex. Teaching rooms and social spaces were arranged around two courtyards: a glazed atrium and an open planted court. Existing entrances through the historic façades remained part of the route into the new accommodation, connecting older civic architecture with changed educational requirements. [3]

Repairing the decorative frontage

Conservation contractors Oldstone recorded repairs to the group’s chimneys, balustrade and elaborate plaster ornament during the project completed in 2014. Corroding iron fixings had damaged the library’s decorative cartouche and roundel. The team recorded the designs before taking sections down, then repaired them using matching lime render and stainless-steel fixings. The work preserved conspicuous details while addressing causes of deterioration. [4]
