Place & story
From classrooms to community facilities
St Kevin’s Girls’ School records its first intake on 1 July 1975: 71 children, including boys while their separate school was still being built. Treasa Bennett was the first principal, assisted by Sr Irene. The school’s account recalls teachers walking to the priest’s house in Elmcastle for lunch because there was initially no staffroom. [2]
A centre funded by residents
Kilnamanagh Family Recreation Centre traces its origins to the residents’ association and its campaigns and social projects. Households contributed through a weekly collection, organised by road collectors and supervisors. A limited company was incorporated in April 1985 to carry the project forward. President Patrick Hillery opened the completed centre in July 1989. An extension opened in 2007 included a day-care centre and members’ bar. [3]
