Place & story
St Tiernan’s on the Enniskerry Road
St Tiernan’s Church was built in 1824–26 and consecrated in 1826. Its granite walls, narrow pointed windows and octagonal spire give it a distinctive outline. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage attributes the design to John Semple. Interior alterations followed in 1908, including the Moore memorial east window by Heaton, Butler and Bayne. The inventory records a further restoration in 2001. [2]
A school opening in 1965
Our Lady of the Wayside National School opened on 1 July 1965 with 52 pupils and two teachers, Frank and Maura Kelliher. Its original facilities included three classrooms and a water tower. Enrolment doubled over the next three years, prompting an extension with additional classroom space, an office, kitchen and central-heating boiler room. [3]
