Place & story

A mill holding beside the main road

A lease preserved by Cavan County Archives gives a detailed glimpse of Ardlougher in 1857. Perrott Mee Thornton leased part of its mill holding to Dr Andrew Brady of Ardloher Cottage for 21 years at an annual rent of £15. The property included houses, a stable and a turf house. Its southern boundary was the public road from Belturbet to Ballinamore, placing the mill within the district’s transport network. [2]

Population across the Famine decade

The 1851 census recorded 75 people in Ardlougher townland, compared with 135 in 1841. Inhabited houses fell from twenty to thirteen over the same decade. These figures refer to the Kildallan parish townland around this locality, rather than a separately enumerated village, and show a substantial contraction during the years that included the Great Famine. [3]

The parish church to the east

Nearby Kildallon Church of Ireland, east of Ardlougher in Kildallan townland, preserves another strand of local history. The Church of Ireland’s building survey records an 1816 date in the vestry and a Board of First Fruits plan. Welland and Gillespie later changed its orientation, turning the original nave into the north transept. The survey also identifies the circular enclosure of an earlier Christian site. [4]
