Place & story

The landscape in 1836

The Ordnance Survey Name Books described Beglieve as an extensively cultivated townland in 1836, with smaller areas of bog and water. Its highest point was the survey’s trigonometrical station, recorded at 679 feet above sea level. Several kilns and the lake called Lough Nagerman were noted. The account, transcribed by Cavan Townlands, also recorded agricultural rents and servants’ wages, preserving details of the local economy alongside the landscape. [2]

Two schools in the records

Cavan’s education archives distinguish Beglieve No.1, identified as a Catholic national school, from Beglieve No.2, identified as Protestant. Inspectors’ marking papers survive for both. These belonged to the Payment by Results examinations introduced in 1872, under which pupils’ examination performance was recorded. The archive catalogue lists five surviving papers for each school, with gaps, rather than an uninterrupted annual series. [3]

People & connections

Teachers and administration

The same archive preserves correspondence that records the people who taught in Beglieve. Papers from the 1880s name James Vogan among retiring teachers, while 1898 correspondence concerns the retirement of E. R. Rice of Beglieve No.1. These administrative traces add individuals to the school history. They also show how small local schools were connected to inspectors and the Education Office in Dublin through routine official correspondence. [3]
