Place & story
Farming beside Milltown
The 1836 Ordnance Survey name books describe Corravilla in Shercock parish as land belonging to William Ruxton, divided into farms of between three and twenty-five acres. Oats, potatoes and flax were grown there. The entry also records a smith’s forge, part of Milltown and a share of Milltown Lough within the townland. These details connect the cultivated landscape with the services and water features around the settlement. [2]
Land offered for sale
An advertisement in the Cavan Observer of 4 January 1862 announced a Landed Estates Court sale involving Thomas Sneyd Wallace’s property. Corravilla and Milltown formed one lot, described as just over 223 statute acres and held in fee. Other lots included Lower Corraville and a divided interest in Upper Corravilla, held on different terms. The notice reveals the layered ownership and lease arrangements beneath the familiar place-name; it does not establish who ultimately bought the land. [3]
A smaller population
The 1901 census report recorded 48 residents in the Corravilla townland of Shercock parish, compared with 82 in 1881 and 53 in 1891. Of the sixteen houses counted in 1901, thirteen were inhabited and two uninhabited. The figures concern the townland around the settlement, rather than a separately enumerated village. They show a community that had become considerably smaller during the final decades of the nineteenth century. [4]
