Place & story
Saint Martin’s and its medieval tower
Saint Martin of Tours church was substantially rebuilt in 1855, incorporating an earlier chapel and a medieval tower now used for its bells. Although often described as a castle, archaeologist Martin E. Byrne’s 2025 report identifies the tower as an addition to a medieval church, possibly dating to the fifteenth century and serving as a clerical residence. The present church has a cruciform layout, pointed windows and extensive carved timber fittings. Its changing fabric brings medieval and nineteenth-century worship together in one building.[2][3]
Floods and buried boundaries
Flooding in 1947 reshaped the ground around the churchyard: concrete boundary walls and an overflow channel were constructed. Archaeological testing for the flood-relief scheme in 2025 uncovered older stone walls north and west of the graveyard, with burials in the areas they enclosed. Byrne interpreted these as likely medieval church boundaries. Nine pieces of medieval pottery were also recovered. The investigations show that the earlier religious enclosure extended beyond parts of the visible churchyard.[3]
The Shamrocks
Ballyhale Shamrocks formed in January 1972 when the Ballyhale and Knocktopher junior hurling clubs joined forces. The club crest also remembers Knockmoylan, an earlier club in the parish. Its players have repeatedly carried local hurling into Kilkenny’s county teams: victorious senior captains included Ger and Liam Fennelly, Henry Shefflin, James Cha Fitzpatrick, Michael Fennelly and Joey Holden. The club’s own history records nine All-Ireland club titles, a remarkable sporting legacy for the combined parish community.[4]
