Place & story

The church of 1832

Saint Michael’s was built in 1832, replacing an earlier village chapel. Its simple single-cell plan and restrained Gothic detailing belong to the years immediately after Catholic Emancipation. The architectural inventory records extensive renovation after 1965, while noting the survival of much of the church’s earlier form. [2]

Timberwork and the detached tower

Inside are a timber gallery on clustered supports, a coffered timber ceiling and a Gothic reredos. Outside, a separate two-stage limestone belfry stands west of the church. The inventory considers it probably a surviving, repositioned or reconstructed element of the older chapel. Its slit openings, quatrefoils and battlemented top give it a character distinct from the church. [2]
