Place & story

A congregation begins in a cottage

John La Touche of Harristown founded Brannockstown’s Baptist congregation around 1870. Baptised by Charles Haddon Spurgeon at London’s Metropolitan Tabernacle, he gathered a small church that initially met in a village cottage. A permanent chapel and neighbouring manse followed. The church’s own history records that La Touche made provision for its continuation after his death in 1904, extending his involvement beyond the building of its first premises. [2]

The stone chapel

The chapel was constructed in 1879–81 and bears the date 1882. Its tall lancet openings, steep roof and slender spire gave the congregation a conspicuous village landmark. The tower changes from a square base to a polygonal upper stage, while limestone and red sandstone provide contrasting colour and detailed stonework. The building’s scale and careful finish distinguish it from the cottage in which the congregation first assembled. [3] [2]

Separate entrances for the school

Brannockstown National School bears an 1885 inscription. Its two projecting entrance porches were originally intended for boys and girls separately, a practical arrangement retained in the building’s form. Alterations around 1985 replaced windows and added a rear extension, while the original school remained recognisable. The architectural inventory also records its late nineteenth-century entrance gate, with cast-iron piers and wrought-iron work, enclosing a schoolyard set back from the road. [4]
