Place & story
From hedge school to schoolhouse
The school’s own history traces teaching in Garryhill to Loughlin Ryan, a hedge-school master in the 1840s. Lord Bessborough built a school for him, and Ryan continued teaching until 1886. His son Malachy taught Greek and Latin to prospective priesthood students. The present school building opened on 16 November 1936; the parish account identifies its builder as Rowley, who also built Bagenalstown’s Garda barracks. [2] [3]
Cecilia Ryan’s young musicians
In 1943 teacher Cecilia Ryan formed a flageolet band after a school inspector’s question prompted the idea. Sixteen pupils learned the instrument and performed around Carlow and Wexford, playing marching tunes, jigs, reels and hornpipes. Cecilia and her husband Patrick, another teacher, had built their home in 1937 on the site of the earlier National and Agricultural School. [2]
