Place & story
Part of Baltinglass Abbey’s estate
Geraldine Stout’s study of Cistercian farming identifies Grangeford as the centre of Baltinglass Abbey’s largest Carlow holdings. These lands bordered the Aghalone River. The surviving records give few details about individual tenants or their farming, although a plough is mentioned at the dissolution. Grangeford therefore appears as a working outlying estate of the abbey, with documentary evidence of cultivation but an incomplete picture of everyday agricultural life. [2]
The castle recorded on a map
The recorded castle site at Grangeford appears on the 1837 Ordnance Survey map, although a later archaeological assessment reports no visible remains. The National Monuments Service description reproduced there mentions a privately held photograph of a curved wall before demolition, possibly part of a tower. It also questions whether the wall was substantial enough for a defended building. The evidence preserves a lost structure while leaving its precise form uncertain. [3]
Two distinct burial places
Grangeford Old has two separately recorded burial grounds. One was shown on the 1839 Ordnance Survey map as a rectangular enclosure marking a former graveyard; later description records no visible surface traces. The other is a circular, tree-planted enclosure. An archaeological assessment repeats local information that burials were transferred from the former to the latter. The two entries distinguish a remembered burial site from the enclosed ground associated with its later history. [3]
