Place & story
The ecclesiastical site
Saint Mullin’s grew around the monastery founded by Moling in the seventh century. The surviving complex includes the remains of a round tower, churches, a mill and a holy well. The oldest church fabric is dated to around the tenth or eleventh century. A Norman motte and bailey adds a later defensive earthwork, while the graveyard includes burials of participants in the 1798 Rebellion. [2]
The river route
The village marks the endpoint of the Barrow Navigation. Waterways Ireland also identifies it as an end of the Barrow Way walking route, which follows the river corridor towards Athy. [3]
