Place & story
Milling and the surrounding parish
Samuel Lewis’s 1837 account describes Staplestown as an alternative name for Ballinacarrig parish beside the Burren. Farming, granite quarrying and flour milling contributed to its economy; he reported annual mill production of about 10,000 barrels. Staplestown Lodge and the mills were among its principal properties. Lewis also records Sir William Temple’s residence here and letters dated from Staplestown, noting that part of his former house remained in the nineteenth century. [2]
A church altered over time
The Church of Ireland church was erected in 1821. The Irish Architectural Archive records its attribution to Thomas Alfred Cobden, while identifying a chancel project associated with James Franklin Fuller in 1880. Alfred Ernest Child later designed a stained-glass window depicting Saint Hubert, dated 1938–39. These separate entries show how additions and artistic commissions continued to develop the church well beyond its initial construction. [3]
Thomas Giffe’s school
An account published in Carloviana in 1948 records a school run by Thomas Giffe in Church Lane in 1824 and earlier. It counted 79 pupils, including 45 boys and 34 girls, drawn from both Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland families. The master’s income combined contributions from the incumbent and Colonel Bruen with quarterly pupil fees. The writer reported that part of the school wall was still identifiable beside a later house. [4]
