Place & story
The school beside Carrahan Bridge
Carrahan’s old school occupied a building beside the bridge that had served as a church until 1820. Proinsias Ní Allmburaín’s school history traces surviving girls’ registers back to 1869 and records 102 boys attending in 1879. When the replacement school opened at Clooney on 18 February 1901, pupils helped move books and portable furniture. Her mother, Nora O’Halloran, remembered carrying the clock as a seven-year-old: a personal recollection of education moving from one village site to another. [2]
The Carrahan Flag tournament
The Carrahan tournament began in September 1888 and ended with Tulla defeating Feakle in May 1889. Its prize, known as the Carrahan Flag, was a large painted banner. Joe Littleton’s research identifies the playing field behind Harrison’s pub in nearby Clooney, rather than placing every match at Carrahan. The banner was later kept by the Sisters of Mercy in Tulla; relatives of the winning team organised its restoration in the 1970s, with the work undertaken by Eugene McCarthy. [3]
Caring for the bridge
Carrahan Bridge has also been the focus of recent community conservation. The Clooney Spancilhill heritage group records obtaining county council engineers’ permission to remove vegetation and undertake minor restoration at Carrahan and Rylane bridges. Local residents carried out the work, which council staff subsequently inspected. The account documents practical care for the crossing associated with the old school. [4]
