Place & story
The place that named a county
Clare Libraries traces the name Clare to clár, a board or plank, associated with a wooden bridge across the waterways beside an island in the Fergus. The settlement’s importance led to its selection as county town in the 1570s, giving County Clare its name. The library distinguishes this origin from the later de Clare family. [2]
Building the quay
The quay’s inscription records construction from July 1843 to March 1845, naming Thomas Rhodes as engineer and Richard Grey as contractor. The Irish Architectural Archive also records an earlier, 1836 proposal by James and George Richard Pain, with plans preserved in the National Library. [3]
Cargoes on the Fergus
The local heritage group records exports of grain, butter, timber, flour and Ballyhickey lead ore, with coal and timber among the main imports. British ports formed the principal trading connections. The crescent-shaped quay incorporated an eighteenth-century predecessor built for Sir Lucius O’Brien. Its dressed limestone walls, mooring stones and grain stores preserve the setting of that river trade. [4]
