Place & story

The Woulfe estate

The Woulfe family’s association with Teermaclane is documented in estate rentals. The University of Galway’s account records Nicholas Woulfe acquiring the property from the Earl of Thomond in the 1680s. Stephen Wolfe held Teermaclane and two other townlands in the Clive estate rental of 1761; Peter Wolfe held the same group in 1841. By the time of Griffith’s Valuation, the estate was under the Court of Chancery. [2]

Schooling before the national school

Aoife de Buitléir’s study identifies two schools in Tiermaclane in the 1824 education inquiry. John Casey taught 40 pupils in a thatched stone building, while Michael Couney taught 38 in the chapel. Girls attended both schools: the returns counted fourteen in Casey’s school and sixteen in Couney’s. These entries establish organised teaching locally well before the surviving Tiermaclane National School registers began in the following generation. [3]

What the registers preserve

Tiermaclane National School’s earliest recorded enrolment was in May 1864. Its registers provide evidence of pupils’ home places, parents’ occupations and previous schooling, allowing the library study to trace connections between education, trades and emigration. The school operated at Ballyea crossroads and was incorporated into the newly built Ballyea school in 1887–88. The study cautiously suggests an earlier connection with Newhall school, rather than treating that proposed institutional succession as certain. [3]
