Place & story
Coolkenno Hall
Coolkenna, also called Coolkenno, has a substantial estate history centred on Coolkenno Hall. Colum O’Rourke records Lorenzo Hodson as a major Coolattin tenant in 1724. The Moland survey of 1728 described his stone-and-lime house, slate roof, gardens, orchards and plantations. The house’s precise construction date remains uncertain, although a gatepost bears the date 1717. Hodson supported the building of Saint Michael’s Anglican church in 1722; his wife Elizabeth donated its chalice and paten that year. [2]
The Haskins family
The University of Kansas holds a school roll annotated by Abraham George Haskins, who farmed Coolkenno Hall after his father Thomas Fitzmaurice Haskins. Abraham was also a veterinarian and organist. The library’s account records that he sold his Coolkenno interests in 1912 and retired to Dublin. His annotations preserve personal and family recollections alongside the history of his former school. [3]
