Place & story
Language, music and a village hall
Scoil Acla began in 1910, growing from the Gaelic League's Gráinne Mhaol branch in Lower Achill. Irish classes were joined by piping, dancing and other cultural activities. The painter Paul Henry directed Douglas Hyde's Casadh an tSúgáin in its Dooagh hall in 1912. A revival in 1985 renewed the school's work, with local organisers and music teachers giving another generation a route into traditional music. [2]
A shore that changes
Dooagh's shoreline made international news when sand returned in the spring of 2017, after the beach had largely disappeared in 1984. The change proved temporary. Achill Tourism recorded another loss following stormy weather in January 2019, when sand gave way to a stony shore again. These dated accounts explain why photographs of the same bay can show strikingly different beaches. [3]
An Atlantic crossing ended here
Dooagh was the destination of Don Allum's solo row from Newfoundland in 1987. His cousin Geoff's account describes villagers lighting the shore with car headlights and wading into rough water to help bring Allum and his boat, QE 3, to safety. Allum stayed in the village afterwards, and local people erected a monument commemorating the crossing. His arrival connected a small Achill shore with the history of ocean rowing. [4]
