Place & story
The old church and Blanchvelle Centre
Knockananna's old Catholic church dates to around 1800. Its large cruciform plan, roughcast walls and pointed windows preserve a relatively simple form of church building that often disappeared beneath later rebuilding elsewhere. A granite bellcote rises at one end. It ceased serving as the parish church in 1978 and became associated with the Blanchvelle Centre, commemorating Fr John Blanchvelle, also known as Blanchfield, who is buried inside.[2][3]
The new church of 1978
The Church of the Immaculate Conception stands beside the older church within the same graveyard setting. Bishop Patrick Lennon opened it on 1 March 1978 during the pastorship of Fr Patrick Boylan. The parish records a construction cost of£110,000. The two buildings show successive responses to the community's worship needs, with the earlier church retained after its replacement came into use.[3][2]
Folklore & tradition
A remembered warning to the rebels
The parish preserves a story about Fr Blanchvelle and the 1798 rebellion. Rebels seeking his blessing before the second Battle of Hacketstown are said to have received a warning that their rising was a century premature. The account belongs to the priest's remembered local reputation for sanctity; it is presented here as a parish tradition, without claiming a contemporary transcript of his words.[3]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
