Place & story

The Cogan house and farm buildings

William Henry Ford Cogan commissioned a new granite house at Tinode from architect William Francis Caldbeck. The Irish Architectural Archive records the work between 1859 and 1864, including a billiard room, stables and offices, with R. Farrell as builder. A later entry identifies new farm buildings by George Coppinger Ashlin in 1870, constructed by J. and W. Beckett. The records distinguish successive architectural commissions within the estate. [2]

The former steward’s house

The architectural inventory dates the smaller house associated with the farmyard to about 1870 and cautiously identifies its original use as a farm manager’s residence. Rubble walls are enlivened by coloured brick dressings and granite details. Its unusual chimney incorporates a bellcote. A later extension altered the original L-shaped plan, but sash windows, shaped bargeboards and a pointed entrance retain much of the building’s nineteenth-century character. [3]

People & connections

June Blake’s garden

June Blake began growing plants from seed and developing a nursery at Tinode around 2003. As the garden expanded, the nursery moved into the old farmyard. Her design incorporated a rediscovered stone wall beside a reflecting pool, with raised beds and paths arranged around the house. Further discoveries of buried cobbles prompted changes to the layout, including steel-edged planting beds, making the site’s earlier fabric part of the developing garden. [4]
