Place & story
An industrial village on Beara
Industrial copper mining began at Allihies in 1812 under the Puxley family. Steam machinery enabled the workings to reach deep below the surface, while crushing and dressing separated the copper-bearing material from its quartz rock. The ore then travelled by sea to Swansea for smelting. The museum’s account describes an industry employing more than 1,500 people at its height, with crowded workers’ housing and difficult living conditions accompanying the expansion. [2]
The man engine at Mountain Mine
The Mountain Mine’s engine house dates from 1862. Geological Survey Ireland identifies it as Ireland’s only engine house built specifically to transport miners between the surface and underground workings, rather than to pump water or lift ore. Mining here reached more than 400 metres underground. The surviving landscape also includes reservoirs, a crushing mill and managers’ accommodation known as the Cornish village. Together these remains show the different tasks needed to sustain a deep mine. [3]
A miners’ chapel becomes a museum
Cornish miners brought their religious life as well as technical skills to Allihies: a Methodist chapel was built for them in 1845. That building later became the Copper Mine Museum. The project grew from discussions among local residents in the mid 1990s and opened in May 2007, with President Mary McAleese attending. Its exhibits combine surviving documents and artefacts with models, linking the chapel to the industrial remains around the village. [4]
