Place & story

A church rebuilt over time

Ballinadee’s Church of Ireland church began in 1759, but the present building reflects later work. The national heritage inventory cites Alexander Sharp Deane’s drawing of 1839 as evidence of rebuilding around that time. A three-stage tower, northern transept and vestry above a crypt give the modest church a varied outline. Its crenellated parapet and corner pinnacles are especially conspicuous. The surrounding graveyard and former glebe house form a related group at the village centre. [2]

Milling and river trade

In 1837, Samuel Lewis described Ballinadee as a village of forty-two houses with a substantial flour mill improved the previous year. A recently constructed road connected it with Ballinspittle. His account of the wider parish also records small quays where boats landed sea sand for use as agricultural manure, and slate carried down the Bandon River for shipment to Cork and other ports. These activities connect the village’s mill with a surrounding landscape of farming, quarrying and river transport. [3]

A school closure in the archives

The National Library preserves correspondence about Dorothy Stopford Price’s closure of Ballinadee National School during an outbreak of scarlatina. Dated between 20 December 1922 and 6 January 1923, the five-page file includes a copy letter from the school manager, William Murphy, and correspondence with the Department of Local Government. The catalogue records a complaint following the closure. It offers a specific local connection with Price’s public-health work, while the outcome requires consultation of the manuscript itself. [4]
