Place & story

A village serving the valley

Ballincurrig lies in the Owenacurra valley north of Lisgoold. Cork County Council’s 2005 local plan described a settlement serving the surrounding countryside through its school, public house and creamery. The creamery immediately north of the village drew on a wider farming area, making the small settlement a local service centre. [2]

The mill cottages

Writing in 2007, Tommy Barker described Ballincurrig’s earlier linen industry and the mill cottages beside its stream. Three workers’ cottages had been considered for restoration but were replaced when their condition proved too poor. Their stone was reused in landscaping around the replacement building. The account records a particular change in the village’s industrial fabric, rather than implying that the house standing there is a surviving mill conversion. [3]

Scoil Naomh Eoin

The local school traces its establishment to 1846. In 1968 it moved to the building that provided space for classrooms, a basketball court and hurling and football areas. The community gathered in September 2018 to celebrate fifty years at that site. Known as Scoil Naomh Eoin, the school belongs to Lisgoold parish and continues an educational tradition stretching back into the nineteenth century. [4]
