Place & story

On the Ballycotton road

Samuel Lewis’s 1837 account describes Lady’s Bridge as a village on the road from Castlemartyr towards Ballycotton. He counted 41 houses and 231 inhabitants. The Catholic chapel served a district embracing Ightermurragh, Garryvoe and Bohillane, with a national school for boys and girls nearby. The village thus combined a roadside position with educational and religious functions extending beyond its own houses. [2]

The village’s Catholic church

The national architectural survey dates the Catholic church at Lady’s Bridge to about 1820. Its relatively plain exterior has a gabled front, a projecting entrance porch and pointed nave windows. Inside, the building preserves a timber gallery, carved marble altar furnishings and mosaic decoration around the altar. The survey also draws attention to the detailed stained glass, whose dedication banners were left blank rather than naming donors. [3]

From village classrooms to Kilcredan

Lady’s Bridge retained its own school alongside those at Kilcredan and Kilmacdonagh into the twentieth century. Kilcredan National School’s history explains how Father Tom Gallagher’s proposal to replace two ageing schools expanded to include the Lady’s Bridge children. The combined school opened at Kilcredan in May 1972 with seven classrooms and six teachers. School buses brought children from the separate local communities to their new shared building. [4]
