Place & story
A writer at the school
In October 2025, Marita Conlon-McKenna described her visit to Bishop Ahern National School in Leamlara. Former principal Marie Murphy told her about reading Under the Hawthorn Tree to pupils while sitting among the trees. The author’s account links the school’s wooded setting with the children’s reading. [2]
A community woodland project
In EirGrid’s February 2025 newsletter, Declan Whelan of Lisgoold Leamlara Community Council recalled developing the idea of a woodland walkway in 2019. The council received €37,000 from the Celtic Interconnector Community Benefit Fund towards the first phase of Leamlara Woods Walking Trail. [3]
