Place & story

Two schools become one

Tirelton National School opened on 2 November 1887, initially with five boys and four girls attending separate schools. Jeremiah Coghlan taught the boys and Ellen Joyce taught the girls. Within a year, their respective enrolments had grown to 83 and 74. The two schools amalgamated in April 1930. The school’s own account preserves these opening-day details, linking the present institution with its nineteenth-century predecessors. [2]
