Place & story

A house built in stages

Donegal County Council lists Castlegrove at Eighterross, Ballymaleel. The more detailed architectural inventory dates the main house to about 1750, with substantial changes around 1825, and allows that earlier fabric may survive. Its classical porch, sash windows and slate roof belong to a building altered over generations. The estate lies east of Ballymaleel’s small settlement, overlooking Lough Swilly; its history should not be mistaken for the construction history of every house in the locality. [2] [3]

The Grove and Brooke connection

The architectural inventory associates the nineteenth-century alterations with Thomas Brooke, born Grove. It also traces the movement of the principal doorway when a new front was added. That physical change offers a useful way to read the house: an older entrance feature was retained within a remodelled residence. The inventory records later hotel and restaurant use, another change in the building’s purpose after its long association with a landed family. [2]
