Place & story
The early country house
Bogay House dates from around 1730 and retains the compact form of an early eighteenth-century country house: five bays, two storeys above a basement and a hipped roof. A projecting porch was added around 1890, while the doorway carries Doric pilasters and a triangular pediment. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records the house’s association with the Duke of Abercorn as a hunting lodge within a larger estate. [2]
The coach yard
East of the house, buildings dating from around 1740 accommodated the less ceremonial work of estate life. The surviving former stables and coach house form a two-storey range with stone walls and brick detailing around its openings. Originally two coach houses framed a courtyard through which arriving and departing coaches passed. Two pillars beside the walled garden preserve traces of the partner building that was subsequently demolished. [3]
Garden walls and memorial stones
The walled garden belonged to the same group of service buildings. Its substantial stone enclosure contained a glasshouse, whose remains were recorded by the architectural survey, and continued to serve as a garden when surveyed in 2008. Stone and slate memorial tablets set into the wall carry dates from 1814 to 1970. Together with the coach buildings, the garden records the scale and changing uses of the estate beyond the main house. [3]
