A village on the Galway–Westport road
Samuel Lewis’s 1837 account of Kilmainemore places the village on the road from Galway towards Westport. Petty sessions met each Wednesday, a penny post connected it with Hollymount, and fairs on 12 July and 28 October traded cattle and sheep. The surrounding parish was largely pastoral, with limestone quarrying and a limited fuel supply. Lewis also described a village spring disappearing underground and forming a turlough in winter, recording a seasonal water feature alongside the better-documented institutions of market and administration.[2]
Saint Patrick’s and Harry Clarke’s glass
Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church at Frenchbrook North was completed in 1830 and substantially reconstructed in 1956–57. The architectural inventory attributes the later work to Edward Raphael Ryan. Its cruciform plan, pointed openings and slender western tower preserve the outline of an early nineteenth-century church despite this extensive rebuilding. Inside, the Healy memorial east window was supplied by Harry Clarke in 1926. The window therefore predates the reconstruction, adding a distinct artistic layer to the church’s longer sequence of building and furnishing.[3]
The Cannon estate and the 1852 sale
Landed Estates research identifies Henry Cannon as the early nineteenth-century purchaser of Kilmaine village and surrounding townlands from the Millers of Milford. After his death, his brother-in-law John Fair acted as executor. In 1852, Fair advertised an estate of 1,650 acres around Kilmaine through the Encumbered Estates’ Court, with John William Cannon petitioning for the sale. The estate included some church land. These records place the village within a network of leases, family responsibilities and land sales extending beyond the houses along its road.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
