The Batts’ school and practical farming

The Batt family established Carradoan School in the mid-1840s. Donegal's library learning resource records 150 pupils, mostly from the Drumhalla area, and identifies Thomas Batt as owner of the school land in the 1856 valuation. In 1852 it became an agricultural school: its teacher rented nearby ground and taught older boys how to farm. The school thus combined classroom instruction with practical work on the land. [2]

A new school in 1930

Saint Garvan's National School replaced the old Carradoan school in December 1930, opening with 63 pupils. The library account describes three classroom fireplaces, initially burning turf and later coal, which teachers had to tend during winter. Children walked to school, and playground games included chasing and skipping. These details belong to the successor school, documenting how education continued after the Carradoan building ceased serving its original purpose. [3]

Carrowdoan’s native woods

The woodland account by Seán Ó Gaoithín describes Carrowdoan Woods as an extensive native woodland spanning several townlands. Their appearance on the 1835 Ordnance Survey map establishes their long continuity in the landscape. Birch scrub, low-growing sessile oak and adjoining moorland form a sequence of vegetation communities. The woods are in shared private ownership, and the published survey records viewing from the road rather than public access through them. [4]
