Place & story

The Crochet House

A thatched cottage in the heart of Carrowmenagh served as a training school for lace and crochet. Local historian Joan Doherty records that its tutor, Miss Cassidy, travelled from Buncrana by train to Carndonagh and then cycled twelve miles to the village for the week’s teaching. She lodged locally, often with the McCann family who ran the post office. The school gave young women skills they could use in work at home. [2]

A schoolhouse reused

Carrowmenagh’s community centre occupies a school building dating from 1928. It became a community centre in 1980, giving the former classrooms a new role as space for local meetings, classes and events. A voluntary committee manages the centre. [3]
