Place & story

A fortified position beside the lough

Castle Hill occupies a peninsula projecting into Strangford Lough, a position that helped make Ardkeen a stronghold of the Savage family. Samuel Lewis’s 1837 account described the castle as reduced to foundations, with defensive ditches and traces of gardens and orchards still apparent. His description records the remains of a fortified household within a managed landscape, rather than a complete standing castle. It also shows how the lough formed part of the site’s defensive setting. [2]

The old church and its medieval fabric

Ardkeen’s old church stands on the southern side of Castle Hill. The historic buildings survey describes a medieval rectangular church, probably early thirteenth-century in origin, with later rebuilding visible in its heightened walls and blocked openings. The surrounding graveyard contains eighteenth-century headstones, while Savage family grave slabs lie within the church walls. A medieval stone bearing an incised cross adds a separate carved feature. The surviving roofless shell preserves several phases rather than a single unchanged medieval building. [3]

People & connections

Francis Savage’s restoration

The church was already recorded as ruined in 1621. During the 1750s, Francis Savage sought to restore it as a Protestant chapel for his family and friends. He raised subscriptions, obtained £100 from the Irish Parliament and contributed £50 himself. The restoration was completed by about 1761. This intervention returned a long-disused building to worship and reflected the continuing influence of the local estate family, even after their residence had moved from the adjacent tower house to the newer Dorn House nearby.
