Place & story
Margaret Anderson’s nursing career
Margaret Anderson was born in Ballinran, Kilkeel, and built a nursing career in Britain and overseas. The Ulster History Circle’s report of her 2018 commemoration records her wartime nursing award, presented by George V at Buckingham Palace in 1919. It also recalls her service as matron of the temporary hospital supporting construction of the Silent Valley Reservoir. A blue plaque unveiled at Mourne Presbyterian Church Hall in Kilkeel brought wider attention to her story, with family members contributing photographs and memories. [2]
A surviving farmhouse
A listed farmhouse on Aughnahoory Road, within Ballinran townland, preserves a restrained late nineteenth-century rural building type. The official survey describes rendered stone walls, a natural-slate roof, sash windows and a small adjoining lean-to. A granite outbuilding and rubble boundary wall complete its setting. Recorded on the 1901 Ordnance Survey map, the house was recognised for its comparatively little-altered form. It is a reminder that the locality’s architectural heritage includes ordinary farm buildings as well as larger public monuments. [3]
A name carried to Canada
Craig Thompson named his Canadian production company Ballinran Entertainment in 1995 to honour his family’s connection with the townland. In 2026, the company funded restoration of the Ballinran sign, with the work carried out locally by Iain Norris and coordinated by Jenna Stevenson. Reporting on the unveiling, the Mourne Observer described the project as a practical expression of those continuing ties. The sign links a familiar local road name with a company established across the Atlantic. [4]
