Place & story
Belvedere Cottage
Ballyaghlis Lodge began as Belvedere Cottage on the Belvedere estate. It appears under that name on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map. The earlier townland valuation names Henry Hardman as occupier and values the house and outbuildings at £14 16 s. The property therefore survives in both mapped and valuation records from the early nineteenth century. [2]
A growing courtyard farmstead
The farmhouse has a symmetrical three-bay front, timber sash windows and a fanlight above its central doorway. Behind this formal elevation, outbuildings accumulated during the nineteenth century, eventually enclosing a courtyard. The heritage survey identifies surviving pegged roof trusses among them. The group combines a Georgian domestic frontage with the working buildings of a rural property. [2]
The linen connection
Edward S. Clarke moved into the house in 1926. He was managing director of the Island Spinning Mill in Lisburn, giving the property a connection with the Lagan Valley’s linen industry. The name Ballyaughlis Lodge appears on the 1938 Ordnance Survey map, replacing the earlier Belvedere Cottage. The house and its outbuildings were listed in 1984. [2]
