Place & story
A new estate and a mission hall
Belfast City Mission’s history connects Ballybeen’s growth with families resettled after housing demolition around the Newtownards Road. The organisation established a hall in Culross Drive in March 1976 to serve the new estate outside Dundonald. Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Brigade organisations followed alongside services and youth activities. The hall records one response to the task of building community institutions after relocation. [2]
Women organise local services
Ballybeen Women’s Centre opened in 1984. Its thirtieth-anniversary report describes the development of education, employment training, childcare and youth programmes. By that anniversary it reported 142 women completing courses in a year. These services made the centre a practical part of the estate’s social history, linking opportunities to learn and work with support for families close to home. [3]
The Enler complex opens
The Enler Health and Community Centre opened on 22 March 2011 after a project costing £3.7 million. A government-commissioned evaluation records funding from the Department for Social Development, the health department and the International Fund for Ireland. The complex brought community services, day care for older people and retail space together, adding another substantial shared facility to Ballybeen. [4]
