Place & story
The Johnston estate
William Johnston inherited his family’s small estate, mainly at Ballykilbeg outside Downpatrick, after his father’s death in 1853. Known publicly as Johnston of Ballykilbeg, he also worked as a writer and publisher. His newspaper, the Downshire Protestant, began in 1855 and ran for seven years. He unsuccessfully contested Downpatrick in 1857 before gaining a parliamentary seat for Belfast. [2]
Processions and Parliament
Johnston led an Orange procession from Newtownards to Bangor on 12 July 1867 in defiance of the Party Processions Act. His resulting two-month prison sentence helped raise his public profile before his election for Belfast in November 1868. In Parliament he opposed the Act, which was repealed in 1872. He later represented South Belfast from 1885 until his death in 1902. The Ballykilbeg name thus became associated with a political career reaching well beyond the local estate. [2]
A fife and Orange ballads
The Ulster-Scots Agency’s account of the fife illustrates an instrument associated with Johnston and records his work as a ballad writer. His songs included The Orange and Blue and The Orange Standard, with manuscripts preserved at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. These material and literary traces add a musical dimension to the history of a figure more often remembered for political demonstrations. [3]
