Place & story
A village between mountains and coast
Ballymartin occupies an elevated stretch of the County Down coast northeast of Kilkeel. The district council’s settlement appraisal traces its growth around Saint Joseph’s Church and along the Newcastle Road. Undulating farmland, low granite walls and the Mourne Mountains form its setting. The council identifies the coastline to the south as an important landscape and nature-conservation area, closely bordering the village’s linear pattern of development. [2]
The origins of the Lily Whites
Paddy Savage founded Ballymartin’s Gaelic football club in 1922, and its first team took the field in 1925 wearing green jerseys with yellow trim. After an interruption, Father McPhillips revived the club in 1930 and supplied white jerseys, establishing its Lily Whites nickname. The team won its first Down senior football championship in 1938. Football resumed after the war in 1945 under Father McCall, and a second senior championship followed in 1955. [3]
Building a sporting home
The club bought and developed its playing field at Pat’s Road in 1969, adding dressing rooms in 1986. In 1985 it also purchased the Ballymartin Inn, formerly owned by its founder Paddy Savage. A women’s Gaelic football team began in 2002. These changes gave the organisation a lasting physical base and widened its activities beyond the early men’s teams, connecting the club’s later development with its founder’s earlier place in village life.
