Place & story
From thatch to stone
Donacloney Presbyterian congregation began as a secession from Tullylish. Its own history dates the first meeting house on the Moygannon Road site to 1750. A stone-and-lime building with a slate roof replaced it in 1798. The Presbyterian Historical Society preserves a 1795 subscription list for the replacement, recording the contributors and their promised amounts. [2] [3]
The 1901 church
Dry rot prompted another replacement. The congregation resolved to build anew in 1899, laid the foundation stone in October 1900 and opened the church on 15 September 1901. Young and Mackenzie designed the building, using dark stone with contrasting dressings. Its galleries and transepts provided a much larger space than the original mud-walled meeting house. [2] [4]
Memorial windows and a hall
Later service programmes retained by the congregation document further changes: eight memorial windows were dedicated on 17 November 1974 alongside new heating and a public-address system. Another programme records the foundation stone ceremony for a new hall on 6 June 1987. These records show the continued alteration of a church complex whose roots lay in the eighteenth century. [2]
