Farming after army service

Edward James Augustus Howard Brush, generally known as Peter, took up farming at Drumnabreeze after retiring from the army in 1946. Born in Fermoy in 1901, he had served in India and been captured during the defence of Calais in 1940. In County Down he later served as high sheriff in 1953 and vice-lieutenant from 1957 to 1962. [2]

Loyalist politics in the 1970s

In 1972 Brush co-founded and commanded Down Orange Welfare, a loyalist paramilitary organisation. It participated in the Ulster Workers’ Council strike of May 1974, when Brush represented it on the strike council. He also became president of the South Down Ulster Unionist constituency association and served in the 1975–76 Constitutional Convention. He retired from politics in 1977 and died at his Magheralin home in 1984. [2]
