Place & story
Schooldays and concert nights
J. Kerr, schoolmaster from 1939 to 1945, described Garvaghy School as standing between the parish and Presbyterian churches. A wooden partition divided its stone building into two classrooms. In the 1930s a stove heated the senior room and an open fire warmed the junior room. Pupils performed fundraising concerts in Waringsford Orange Hall to help maintain and heat their school. The school closed in December 1969, and its pupils transferred to Kinallen. [2]
Building the Presbyterian church
Garvaghy’s Presbyterian congregation discussed a new church in 1899 and appointed Castlewellan builder Hugh McAleenan. Foundation stones were laid on 29 October 1903. The Gothic-style building cost £1,050, and its first service took place on 15 May 1904, during David Baird’s ministry. [2]
