Place & story

A dated Mourne farm building

An official historic-building survey records a two-storey granite farm building on Glassdrumman Road with a datestone of 1907. An outside flight of thirteen granite steps reaches the upper floor, above ground-level doors. The survey identifies it as a surviving example of a type once common in Mourne but increasingly altered elsewhere. A building appears at the location on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, although the survey regards the present structure as its replacement. [2]

St Mary’s and the parish school

St Mary's Primary School, Glasdrumman, became one of three schools brought together to form St Columban's Primary School in September 2018. The others were Moneydarragh Primary School and St Joseph's in Ballymartin. St Columban's own account identifies the new institution as the parish primary school for Lower Mourne. The amalgamation therefore connects Glasdrumman's educational history with neighbouring communities along the Mourne coast. [3]

People & connections

Derek Davis and the local club

Glasdrumman GAC's tribute of May 2015 describes the lasting friendship that followed Derek Davis's involvement in Celebrity Bainisteoir in 2009. His association continued beyond the television competition: he attended matches, helped club events and entertained annual presentation nights. The club remembered his final visit, to support its team against Aughlisnafin only weeks before his death. This was an ongoing relationship with the community, recorded by the club members who knew him. [4]
