Place & story

A linen house beside the Bann

Lenaderg House on Lurgan Road is a late-eighteenth-century country house associated with the Bann Valley linen industry. The Historic Environment Division dates its main form to around 1780, with nineteenth-century alterations including a tall gabled entrance porch. Its hipped slate roof, sash windows and roughcast walls stand within a setting of mature trees, courtyard buildings, a walled garden and ornamental iron gates. The property was listed in 1977. [2]

People & connections

The Davies family and natural history

Among the house's later residents was John Henry Davies, manager of Milltown bleach works and a botanist whose studies included mosses. The official building history records that he published numerous papers and discovered species previously unrecorded in Ireland; specimens entered Trinity College's herbarium. His son Arthur Crossfield Davies, also associated with the bleach works, pursued a different branch of natural science and became a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1923. [2]

The shop and its telephone box

The former post office at Dandy Row, near the Huntly Road junction, retains a painted H. J. Martin grocery sign and a red telephone kiosk. Armagh I reported in March 2026 that the fire-damaged premises and kiosk had been restored. Amid renewed concern about removal, BT confirmed that the kiosk would remain, although its telephone mechanism was to be removed. The distinction preserved a familiar streetscape feature even as its original communications role changed. [3]
