Place & story
Astronomy at the meeting house
Culnady Presbyterian Church hosted an illustrated astronomy lecture reported by the News Letter on 30 December 1895. W. Redfern Kelly discussed the sun, planets and eclipses to raise money for congregational funds. His presentation lasted about two and a half hours and used nearly 120 projected views, including astronomical photographs. The lantern equipment came from Belfast, bringing scientific spectacle into a rural church as part of its fundraising life. [2]
The school closure debate
The Education Authority’s 2018 case for closing Culnady Primary School recorded 22 pupils in September 2017, down from 38 in 2012. Consultation drew 35 responses, 34 opposing closure; supporters of the school proposed federation with Ampertaine as an alternative. The authority nevertheless argued that falling enrolment threatened educational and financial sustainability. Its published decision records approval on 3 April 2019 for discontinuing the school. [3] [4]
A new purpose for the school building
The former school later returned to the story of the local Presbyterian congregation. In March 2025, the Presbyterian Church in Ireland reported that Culnady and Swatragh church had bought the building for community outreach. Moderator Richard Murray described hearing about its plans during a Mid-Ulster visit. The report establishes a new intended community role for the premises, without yet documenting the completed programme. [5]
