Place & story
A settlement recorded on maps
Desmond McCourt’s 1950 study traced a cluster of three dwellings in Drumraighland townland in 1699 and 1782. By 1832 it contained 32 houses. During his own research, the surviving buildings served as outbuildings belonging to one farmer. His account records a marked change in the settlement’s size and use. [2]
Dividing the land
Writing in 1881, Finlay Dun described Drumraighland as a townland of 753 statute acres. Five holders had leased it in 1700; he counted forty holders at the 1846 lease renewal and seventy-five households, including subtenants, by his own time. Thirty-eight households occupied less than an acre. These figures describe the wider townland, rather than a count of village houses. [3]
