Place & story
A municipal leisure centre
Lisnagelvin Leisure Centre opened on 17 April 1980. Reporting its twenty-fifth anniversary, Brendan McDaid recorded the council’s estimate of four million visits since opening. An aerobics studio and fitness suite had been added in 1994. [2]
The final announcement
The centre closed in 2015, when the Foyle Arena replaced it. A closing-day film by former staff member Maureen Allan preserved its interior. Derry News recalled receptionist Elaine McIntyre returning from retirement to make the familiar changing-room announcement one last time. [3]
