Place & story
The elder John McShain
The Hibernofiles heritage project identifies Slaughtmanus as the birthplace of John McShane, later McShain, senior, in 1860. A carpenter, he emigrated to Philadelphia in 1885 and worked with his uncle, the builder William J. McShane. He established his own contracting business in 1888 and married Catherine Malloy in 1893. After his death in 1919, his son John continued the business. The connection with Slaghtmanus belongs specifically to the father’s birthplace. [2]
St Mary’s championship of 2025
St Mary’s Slaughtmanus won its first Derry Junior Championship in October 2025, defeating Doire Trasna at Celtic Park by 2–15 to 1–10. Steve Doherty’s match report records nine points from Conor McGee and goals from Barry Lyons and Killene Thornton. It was the club’s first championship victory since 1988, giving the 2025 final a particular place in the community’s sporting history. [3]
