Place & story

When old fences disappeared

Richard Griffith’s boundary report includes Tirmacoy in a group of townlands where old boundary fences had generally been removed. It lists divisions involving Ned, Barnakilly and Carnamuff, among others. The report explains that replacement lines, marked in blue on the accompanying plans, had already been recognised for several years. They followed the company’s estate maps and the boundaries according to which tenants occupied their holdings. [2]

Recognition by the Privy Council

The report received the county grand jury’s approval at the Summer Assizes of 1855. A Privy Council order dated 22 April 1856 adopted the boundaries described in the report for public purposes, generally from 1 May that year, with particular transitional provisions. The document shows the official map being brought into agreement with divisions already accepted on the ground. [2]
